Unity Cup Is My First Trophy as a Coach – Super Eagles Boss Eric Chelle

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has described the recent Unity Cup victory as a special moment in his career, proudly stating that it is his first trophy as a coach.

Chelle guided Nigeria to a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over Jamaica on Saturday after a 2-2 draw in normal time to lift the Unity Cup. While the tournament may not be a major title, Chelle is cherishing the success and sees it as a stepping stone for greater achievements with the national team.

“In reality, this is my first trophy as a coach,” Chelle told Oga Nla Media after the match. “When I was a player, I won trophies, but this is my first as a coach. I hope with this, I can bring more trophies for Nigeria.”

The game itself wasn’t the Super Eagles’ most convincing display, but it showed positive signs. Players like Samuel Chukwueze, Christantus Uche, Benjamin Fredrick, and Felix Agu impressed, despite many of the squad being new or fringe players.

Chelle’s tactics also earned some praise, and he now looks ahead to more competitive challenges. The focus now shifts to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December—if he remains in charge.

The Unity Cup may not carry the weight of a continental or global title, but for Chelle, it marks a meaningful beginning in his coaching journey. He’ll be under pressure to build on this momentum and start shaping a strong first-team core if he hopes to bring more silverware to Nigeria and secure his long-term future as Super Eagles coach.
