Uruguay defeat Brazil to reach Copa America semi-final

Uruguay defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout to advance to the semifinals of the Copa América after a grueling 0-0 draw.

The match was decided by penalties, with Uruguay’s Sergio Rochet saving Brazil’s first penalty from Éder Militão, and Douglas Luiz hitting the post.

Although Brazil’s Alisson Becker denied José María Giménez and Gabriel Martinelli scored to keep Brazil in the contest, Manuel Ugarte scored the decisive spot kick to secure Uruguay’s victory.

The match was physically intense, with 41 fouls between both teams. Uruguay’s Nahitan Nández was sent off late in the second half, giving Brazil a numerical advantage, but they were unable to capitalize.

The absence of Vinícius Júnior, who was suspended, impacted Brazil’s attacking prowess. Brazil’s Endrick, 17, faced tough challenges throughout the match, and tensions flared when Ronald Araújo’s challenge on him led to a confrontation with Raphinha.

Darwin Núñez missed a close-range header for Uruguay, while Brazil’s best chance of the half was a counterattack shot by Raphinha, which was saved by Rochet.

After Nández’s red card for a studs-up challenge on Rodrygo, Brazil struggled to break down a resolute Uruguay defense. The match ended goalless, leading to a penalty shootout without extra time.

Uruguay, coached by Marcelo Bielsa, have now beaten Brazil in consecutive matches for the first time since 1992. This win marks a significant achievement, following their victory over Brazil in a World Cup qualifier.

Brazil, meanwhile, faced another quarterfinal exit via penalties, having been eliminated by Croatia in the 2022 World Cup.

Uruguay will face Colombia in the semifinals, aiming to continue their strong run in the tournament. Brazil, despite their disappointment, remain focused on future challenges, including World Cup qualifiers.
