Valencia Coach Explains Sadiq Umar’s Absence in Win Over Getafe
Valencia head coach Carlos Corberán has explained why Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar did not play in their 3-0 win against Getafe on Saturday at the Mestalla Stadium.
Sadiq, who joined Valencia on loan from Real Sociedad in January, has scored five goals in thirteen La Liga matches and has impressed fans, leading to talk of a possible permanent move this summer.
However, the forward did not feature in the big win over Getafe, raising questions about his absence.
Speaking after the match, Corberán dismissed reports that Sadiq was left out due to a clause in his contract linked to the number of games he plays.
“I’ve not been told about any clause in Sadiq’s contract about match appearances, and I don’t think such a clause exists,” Corberán said on the club’s official website. “We make our decisions based on what we believe is best for the team.”
He added, “We have many good players who sometimes don’t start. I believe in all of them, and I’m sure that if they had played, they would’ve helped the team. They’ve shown their quality in games and in training.”
Corberán said the decision to start Hugo Duro instead of Sadiq or Rafa Mir was purely based on tactics.
“Hugo Duro has been very good for our style of play. He started last week and this week because I thought it was the right choice. That doesn’t mean we don’t have confidence in Sadiq or Rafa Mir,” he said.
“I’m very pleased with all three strikers. They’re all performing well and offer different qualities to the team.”
With only a few matches left this season, Sadiq will be hoping to get more chances to prove himself and help Valencia qualify for European football.
