WAFCON: Ajibade, Nnadozie bag Best Player and Goalkeeper Awards

Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie were honoured with major individual awards after helping the Super Falcons win their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night in Rabat, Morocco.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. The skilful winger led the team with passion and consistency, earning Woman of the Match in three of Nigeria’s six games. Her leadership and attacking threat were key as Nigeria defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was awarded Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. The 23-year-old kept clean sheets throughout the group and knockout stages, conceding only two goals — both in the final. Her sharp reflexes and calm presence in goal were crucial, especially in Nigeria’s semi-final win against defending champions South Africa.

Despite Morocco’s loss in the final, Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the Golden Boot after finishing as the top scorer with five goals. She opened the scoring in the final, but Nigeria came back to win and deny the hosts their first title.

South Africa received the Fair Play Award for their positive conduct and discipline during the tournament.

The 2024 edition marked the 13th WAFCON tournament. With their latest win, the Super Falcons have now triumphed in all 10 WAFCON finals they’ve reached — confirming once again that they are the undisputed queens of African football.
