Curry stars as Warriors break Bulls record with 73rd win

The Golden State Warriors were never going to let this record slip away and Stephen Curry made sure of that by completing an incredible NBA season.

Curry was pretty much unstoppable on Wednesday to lead the Warriors to a 125-104 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at Oracle Arena.

The victory gave the Warriors 73 wins to set a single-season record, breaking the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ mark.

“We don’t have any room for error,” Curry told ESPN following the game.

“For us to keep that play-off focus these last two weeks has been mentally and physically challenging, but we’ll be refreshed by this weekend.”

The NBA play-offs begin on Saturday and coach Steve Kerr, who played for the Bulls team that set the wins record 20 years ago, will try to lead the Warriors to a second straight NBA title.

“It feels different as a coach than it did as a player, but the way the respective seasons went were kind of the same. Lose one, get angry and then win 10,” Kerr told reporters.

“It shows the competitive desire of our players. It was fun to watch.”

While leading his team to an NBA record, Curry established a new milestone of his own.

His 10 three-pointers gave him 402 for the season, blowing past his own NBA record of 286.

“I was aware of the 400, but we wanted to win the game,” Kerr said. “I was glad we didn’t have to play him in the fourth quarter. It all worked out.”

The Warriors (73-9) held a 70-50 half-time advantage and, while the Grizzlies (42-40) made a couple runs in the second half, the final outcome was never really in doubt.

Just for good measure, Curry added 21 points in the third quarter and started the final period on the bench with his team holding a commanding 21-point lead.

The Warriors held the Grizzlies to 43 per cent shooting from the floor, and eight-for-24 from behind the arc.

That was not nearly good enough to keep up with the Warriors, who had 102 points at the end of the third quarter.
