Wasteful Alvaro Morata sets new record in Chelsea’s draw with Arsenal

Alvaro Morata set an unwanted Premier League record as Chelsea and Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening. Jack Wilshere opened the scoring in the second half but Eden Hazard netted an equaliser from the penalty spot.

The Premier League champions then took the lead through Marcos Alonso before Hector Bellerin’s fine strike from the edge of the area secured a point for Arsene Wenger’s side. Morata, meanwhile, missed three one-on-one chances to give Chelsea the lead. The first came in the second half when he raced clear but screwed his effort wide of Petr Cech’s goal.

The second opportunity came with the game level at 1-1 but after shrugging off Shkodran Mustafi, Morata chipped his shot over Arsenal’s goal. Morata had another excellent chance to win the game in injury time but on that occasion he struck his effort straight at Cech.

Antonio Conte was fuming with Chelsea’s record signing on the sidelines as his angry reaction to his striker’s second miss was caught by the television cameras. And according to Opta’s statistics, no player has missed more clear-cut chances in a single Premier League game than Morata managed against Arsenal.
