Wayne Rooney criticizes Southgate for not starting Mainoo and Gordon in Euro 2024 group games

Former England star Wayne Rooney has criticized Gareth Southgate’s decision not to start Kobbie Mainoo and Anthony Gordon in England’s Euro 2024 group games. Rooney believes Southgate’s choices have hindered the young players’ development.

Rooney Critical of Southgate’s Selections

Rooney has been vocal about his desire to see Mainoo and Gordon in the starting lineup. He argues that their performances off the bench in the group stage, particularly against Slovenia, demonstrated their potential and readiness for more significant roles.

What Happened?

In a column for The Times, Rooney highlighted how Mainoo, Gordon, and Cole Palmer impressed in their limited time on the field. He suggested that their strong showings should earn them starting positions in the knockout round against Slovakia.

The Bigger Picture

Southgate has largely stuck with his preferred starting XI during the group stage, making only minor adjustments. However, the impact made by Mainoo and Gordon has led to growing calls from fans and pundits for their inclusion in the starting lineup for the crucial round of 16 match.

What Rooney Said

Rooney stated, “Against Slovenia, Kobbie Mainoo staked a big claim for a starting place, Cole Palmer was very good, and Anthony Gordon, though he played only a few minutes, had a couple of excellent touches. Gareth may have stumbled upon the right team at just the right time in the tournament. I would play at least two of those three youngsters against Slovakia.”

Rooney continued, “None of what happened in the group stage surprised me. I would never have played Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, and when the experiment didn’t work, Gareth tried Conor Gallagher. Gareth killed both a bit by discarding them, but in each case, it was the right call. When Mainoo came in, you saw him making forward runs and showing composure on the ball. Palmer is suited to international football with his calmness and personality on the stage. Gordon is more direct and ensures a good blend.”

What Next for England?

Reports indicate that Mainoo is set to start against Slovakia, with Gordon potentially replacing Phil Foden, who may not be fully fit after taking leave for the birth of his third child. If England wins, they will advance to the quarter-finals to face either Italy or Switzerland.
