‘We Are Ready’ – Enugu Declares Readiness to Host 2026 National Sports Festival
As the curtains close on the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State, Enugu State has proudly declared its full readiness to host the 2026 edition of Nigeria’s biggest sporting event.
Speaking during a press briefing today, the Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, Love Ikechukwu, confidently announced that the state is prepared to welcome athletes, officials, and media professionals from across the country with world-class facilities, guaranteed security, and a colourful festival experience.
“We are ready to host Nigeria,” Ikechukwu stated. “From infrastructure to logistics and hospitality, everything is in place. The opening ceremony will be nothing short of spectacular — we’re ready to set a new standard and even surpass the success Ogun State recorded.”
The Commissioner outlined major facilities already in place, including a fully equipped Games Village, a modern media centre within the main stadium, and a reliable transport system to ensure smooth movement for athletes and guests.
Ikechukwu also revealed ongoing partnerships with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), aimed at ensuring thorough media coverage and strong collaboration with key stakeholders in sports.
Beyond the games, the Commissioner encouraged visitors to explore the peaceful and scenic beauty of Enugu, describing it as a top destination for both sports and tourism. “Our waterfalls, rolling hills, and historical landmarks tell a beautiful story. Enugu is more than just a sports venue — it’s a place of peace, culture, and nature,” he said.
On security, Ikechukwu assured Nigerians that Enugu is one of the safest states in the country today. He highlighted the end of MASSOB activities and the cancellation of the “sit-at-home” directive as major steps that have restored normalcy in the region.
“Security is no longer an issue. Enugu has moved on,” he declared, referencing the recently hosted international marathon, which featured athletes from outside the country, as a sign of the state’s improved image and stability.
With these strong assurances and visible progress, Enugu looks set to make history as a new hub for sports, tourism, and youth development in Nigeria.
