Wellington Jighere finishes 6th as Nigel Richards claims the 2018 Mattel World Scrabble Championship

Nigeria’s representative at the 2018 Mattel World Scrabble Championship, Wellington Jighere has finished 6th at the just concluded tournament in Torquay, England.

The 2015 world scrabble champions gave his best but it could only earn him a 6th place finish at the tournament organised to celebrate Scrabble’s 70th year anniversary.

After placing 6th in the round-robin, Wellington set up a quarterfinal clash against Kevin McMahon to whom he lost narrowly in the last 8.

After the first two games ended in a 1-1 draw, Kevin McMahon took the third game to clinch a 2-1 victory in the best of three quarterfinal game.

Wellington Jighere efforts could only earn him a 6th place finish.

While Nigel Richards who was the highest ranked player at the tournament lived up to his rating by beating Jesse Day in the final to claim the title.

The New Zealand veteran beat the American in the final to claim the 2018 Mattel World Scrabble Championship title.

Wellington Jighere who was gallant in defeat thanked those who supported him during the tournament for their unflinching support.

“For everyone out there who rooted for me, I say thanks for your unflinching support.

“I may not have done you proud in the way we all might have expected but I sure did you proud by being gallant in defeat.”
