Westbrook wants ring, not MVP

Russell Westbrook dismissed talk of winning the NBA MVP, insisted his sole focus is guiding the Oklahoma City Thunder to a championship.

Westbrook has enjoyed a stellar season so far, with triple-doubles virtually a daily occurrence when he steps on the court.

The five-time NBA All-Star, however, told reporters on Sunday: “I don’t know how the voting goes. I really don’t care.

“Honestly, [winning] a championship is the biggest goal for me. It’s something that’s always been an important thing for me as a player.

“It’s something the I try to strive for and use my talents to win a championship.”

Westbrook was speaking before Oklahoma City’s 99-96 overtime win against the Boston Celtics.

In a game unusual to Westbrook’s standards, he did not record a triple-double.

Entering the game with seven triple-doubles, the longest streak since Michael Jordan in 1989,  Westbrook had to be content with 37 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

The double-double display meant Westbrook fell just two games short of Wilt Chamberlain’s record of nine consecutive matches with a triple-double in 1968.
