What Ademola Lookman said after Atalanta’s goalless draw vs Arsenal

Nigerian international and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman faced a tough challenge in Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League opener against Arsenal, which ended in a 0-0 draw at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Thursday night.

Lookman, who had been in fine form, including a standout performance against Fiorentina the previous weekend, found himself closely marked and contained by Arsenal’s disciplined defense. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to register a single shot on goal throughout the 89 minutes he was on the pitch.

In a post-match interview with UEFA, Lookman praised Arsenal’s quality, saying, “It’s hard against a team like Arsenal to find space, they are a top team. The atmosphere was great and so was our performance.”

Although Lookman couldn’t find the back of the net, his overall contribution was still significant. He led the game in completed dribbles and tackles, finished with an impressive 96% pass completion rate, created two chances, and contributed to Atalanta’s play with two key passes and three ball recoveries.

The game’s pivotal moment came in the 51st minute when Atalanta was awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge by Thomas Partey. However, Mateo Retegui’s effort was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, denying the home side a chance to break the deadlock.

Fans took to social media, expressing that Lookman should have taken the penalty instead, considering his current form. Nevertheless, Atalanta’s attacking pressure and Arsenal’s defensive resilience resulted in both teams sharing the points.

With this result, Ademola Lookman and Atalanta shift focus to their next Champions League match, hoping to convert their strong performance into goals. For now, they return to Serie A action, where they will face newly promoted Como at home.

This Champions League campaign promises to be an exciting test for Lookman, as he aims to continue delivering for both Atalanta and Nigeria on the European stage.
