Who is new Super Eagles star? Felix Agu cleared to play for Nigeria
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu is now eligible to play for the Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.
Agu, who previously played for Germany’s U21 team, has spoken often about his dream to represent Nigeria, the country of his father. FIFA rules allowed him to switch because he had never played an official match for Germany’s senior team.
Earlier this week, Agu was included in Nigeria’s 26-man squad for the Unity Cup—a four-nation tournament set to begin at the end of May. However, the NFF initially stated that he would only train with the team while they awaited clearance.
That delay is now over.
“Felix Nnaemeka Agu confirmed ok to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles,” the NFF wrote on their official X account.
“The German FA have confirmed that the player never played in an official match at junior or senior level for Germany—only 2 friendly games for the U21s in 2019. Welcome Felix!”
A Boost for the Super Eagles
Agu’s clearance is good news for Nigeria, as the 25-year-old is a versatile and talented player. He can play as a right-back, left-back, or even in midfield. His pace, dribbling skills, and balance make him a strong addition to the squad.
With Agu now available, he adds competition for Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi, who are regulars in Nigeria’s defence.
Who is Felix Agu?
Felix Nnaemeka Agu was born on 27 September 1999 in Osnabrück, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a German mother. He grew up in Germany and played youth football there, eventually earning a spot in Germany’s U21 team in 2019, where he featured in two friendly matches.
Currently playing for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, Agu is known for his agility, quick reactions, and technical ability. Despite his German upbringing, he never gave up hope of representing Nigeria.
Now officially a Super Eagles player, Agu will aim to make a strong impression during the Unity Cup and in future competitions.
