Why Edo State Coach Was Suspended from the 22nd National Sports Festival

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) has suspended Edo State coach, Jackson Iyobosa Edobor, from taking part in the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games, due to alleged unruly behaviour.

The suspension was announced in a letter signed by the CFN Secretary General, Joel Akinluwa. It stated that Coach Edobor would not be allowed to attend any cycling competitions or visit the cycling venue with immediate effect.

This action follows an incident on May 21, 2025, during the cycling event in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where Coach Edobor allegedly threatened to kill invited Commissaire, Mr. Osaretin Emuze, and accused him of influencing the outcome of the Male Team Pursuits event.

The CFN described Coach Edobor’s behaviour as unacceptable, stating that it not only brought shame to him and his team but also damaged the integrity of the event.

The federation made it clear that the suspension would only be lifted if Coach Edobor writes an apology letter to the CFN, acknowledging his actions and promising not to repeat such behaviour. The letter must be submitted within 48 hours, or further disciplinary actions may follow.

Many teams at the festival have expressed dissatisfaction over the actions of officials, with protests even occurring during the Kung Fu competition over results.
