Why Goalkeepers Should Not Be Demoted for Mistakes – Ghanaian goalie Felix Kyei Speaks Out

Medeama goalkeeper Felix Kyei has called on Ghana Premier League clubs to stop dropping goalkeepers after they make mistakes during matches.

Several goalkeepers in the league have lost their places recently due to errors, including former Asante Kotoko players Danlad Ibrahim and Felix Annan.

But Kyei believes this approach is wrong and unfair. Speaking to Medeama FM, the 22-year-old said:

“It’s not right for clubs to drop a goalkeeper just because he made a mistake. Goalkeepers need regular games to stay sharp and improve.”

He explained that replacing a goalkeeper after one bad game does not help them grow or learn.

“If you remove a goalkeeper after a mistake and replace him with another, how will he learn? Goalkeepers improve by learning from their errors, not by sitting on the bench.”

Kyei also pointed out how clubs in Europe handle similar situations differently:

“In Europe, when a goalkeeper makes a mistake, he often keeps his place in the next match. That’s how they learn and get better. We should do the same here.”

Kyei made 16 appearances in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, keeping five clean sheets and conceding 19 goals. Since joining Medeama, he has built a strong reputation and was named in the standby squad for Ghana’s 2023 AFCON team, although he didn’t make the final list.

His message is clear: goalkeepers need trust, patience, and consistent playing time—not punishment—for them to develop and succeed.
