‘Why I signed for Kano Pillars’ – Super Eagles star Shehu Abdullahi
Super Eagles defender Shehu Abdullahi has explained that his decision to return to Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars was because of his love for the club.
The 31-year-old completed his move to Kano Pillars earlier this month after failing to secure a new contract in Europe. Abdullahi’s last club was Levski Sofia in Bulgaria, where he signed in September 2022. However, his contract ended in January 2023, leaving him without a club until his recent move back to Pillars.
Many players who cannot find clubs in Europe usually prefer to stay abroad and wait for another opportunity. But Abdullahi chose to return to Kano Pillars, the team where he began his career, to continue playing football.
Speaking to the club’s media team, Abdullahi expressed his happiness about rejoining the team. “I’m happy to be here. Kano Pillars is our club, and everyone is proud of it. It’s always been a dream to return to where we started,” he said.
“Kano is home to us. They always welcomed us, even when we were in Europe. They kept sending us messages, encouraging us to come back. We’re happy to be here and hope to make the fans proud.”
Abdullahi was on the bench in Kano Pillars’ recent 2-0 win over Sunshine Stars, where fellow returnee Ahmed Musa scored both goals. Their next game is against Akwa United, and Abdullahi will be hoping to make his debut soon.
The defender, who also plays as a defensive midfielder, was once a key part of Nigeria’s national team but has not played for the Super Eagles since 2022.
