Why Nigeria’s Felix Agu and Three Others Have Not Returned For Pre-Season At Werder Bremen

Several Werder Bremen first-team players have returned from their summer break to start their usual medical and fitness tests ahead of the new season. These checks will continue over the weekend, as confirmed by the club’s official website.

However, four players – Felix Agu, Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid, and Marco Grüll – have not yet returned to Bremen. The club explained that these players are still on extended breaks after representing their national teams at the end of last season.

Felix Agu, who had an impressive 2024–2025 campaign with Bremen, recently switched international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria. He had previously made two appearances for Germany’s Under-21 side.

After receiving clearance from the German Football Association, Agu made his full debut for Nigeria in the Unity Cup final against Jamaica. He played 83 minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle had considered including Agu in the squad for a high-profile friendly against Russia in Moscow last month, but the defender couldn’t travel as he didn’t have a valid visa in time.

The 25-year-old has now been told to report back for pre-season training on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

Agu has reportedly drawn interest from clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Serie A this summer, but for now, he remains a Werder Bremen player, with a contract running until 30 June 2027.
