Why NIS DG Philip Shaibu Met with the Education Minister and the Future of Sports Education in Nigeria

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, is taking steps to create more opportunities for sports training, skills development and youth employment in Nigeria.

This follows his meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, to strengthen the relationship between the Federal Ministry of Education and the NIS.

The meeting focused on plans to include sports in Nigeria’s education system, improve skills training and create more job opportunities for young people.

Shaibu disclosed the meeting in a post on his social media handle, where he also revealed that the minister was willing to support the integration of NIS training programmes into the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework.

Sharing details of the meeting, Shaibu wrote:

“I paid an official visit to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, to strengthen collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Sports (NIS).

“Our discussions centred on integrating sports into Nigeria’s education system, strengthening skills development and expanding opportunities for youth employment.

“I appreciate the Minister’s warm reception and commitment to integrating NIS training programmes into the Federal Government’s TVET framework.

“At NIS, we remain committed to developing skilled manpower and unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s sports sector.

“Together, we are building a stronger future for Nigerian sports!”

The meeting took place a day after Shaibu returned from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he attended the graduation ceremony of the NIS Executive Coaching Certificate Programme.

The graduation was historic, as it was the first time in 52 years that the institute held a course graduation outside Lagos.

The programme is part of the reforms introduced under Shaibu’s leadership to reposition the institute and help it achieve its founding purpose of training skilled people for Nigeria’s sports industry.

If the proposed partnership with the Ministry of Education is fully implemented, NIS training programmes could reach more young Nigerians, improve professional sports education and open new employment opportunities.

The development could also strengthen the role of sports in Nigeria’s education system and support the growth of the country’s sports industry.
