Willam Troost-Ekong named 2023 AFCON player of the tournament
William Troost-Ekong was named the Player of the Tournament at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), after the final match on February 11, 2024.
From a player who was at risk of missing the tournament, Ekong returned to the Super Eagles to reclaim his starting spot for the AFCON.
The centre-back earned this prestigious award for his outstanding performances for the Super Eagles throughout the AFCON 2023 finals.
Troost-Ekong’s contributions were notable, having scored three goals in six appearances for Nigeria during the competition.
During the award ceremony, Troost-Ekong was flanked by Ronwen Williams, who received the Best Goalkeeper accolade, and Emilio Nsue, the Golden Boot winner.
Despite Nigeria’s loss in the final to hosts Cote d’Ivoire with a scoreline of 2-1, Troost-Ekong’s consistent excellence throughout the tournament earned him the well-deserved recognition.
Equatorial Guinea’s forward, Emilio Nsue, clinched the top scorer award with five goals to his name, while South Africa’s Rowen Williams was honored with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
Simon Adingra, the promising winger from Brighton & Hove Albion, was recognized as the Young Player of the Tournament, and Emerse Fae of Cote d’Ivoire was named the Coach of the Tournament.
