William Troost-Ekong expresses surprise at Super Eagles absence amid retirement speculation
William Troost-Ekong, the Vice-Captain of the Super Eagles and defender for PAOK, has voiced his surprise at being excluded from the Nigerian National Team in their last four matches.
The 30-year old’s absence has led to speculation about his potential retirement from international duty, with concerns arising about his participation in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ekong, a Dutch-Nigerian defender, addressed the rumors surrounding his international future, clarifying that he has not retired from representing Nigeria.
Despite not being part of recent squads against Saudi Arabia, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, Ekong affirmed his commitment to the national team and expressed eagerness to contribute.
Recall that SportsRation exclusively reported reasons why Jose Pesiero has not Invited the PAOK defender to the Super Eagles team since September, but could drop guard ahead of the AFCON.
In his statement as quoted by SOCCERNET, Ekong said, “No, I haven’t retired from international football. I think it’s too early for me to make that decision. I’m still very willing, and yes, supporting the team. I’ve been following the games like always. I think I have been part of the squad for like eight years now.
” So it has been a bit of a surprise for me. But the best I can do is to work hard in my club. I think I am showing that I can still be of great help for the team.
” Yeah, we will see what happens with AFCON. But I’m still very willing and I want the best for Nigeria.”
As the Super Eagles prepare for the 2023 AFCON campaign in January, fans eagerly await the provisional squad list from coach Jose Peseiro.
Ekong’s reassurance about his willingness to contribute suggests that his absence from recent matches may be attributed to factors other than retirement.
The upcoming tournament will shed light on Ekong’s continued role in the Nigeria national team.
