William Troost-Ekong praises Ahmed Musa’s return to action, clarifies Super Eagles captaincy

As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers against Libya, William Troost-Ekong has cleared the air on the team’s captaincy, reaffirming that Ahmed Musa remains the official captain of the Nigerian national team.

Troost-Ekong, who has worn the captain’s armband in Musa’s absence over the past year, was asked about the veteran forward’s return to action in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with Kano Pillars. Musa recently marked his comeback with a brace in a 2-0 win over Sunshine Stars, sparking discussions about his availability for the national team once again.

Speaking at a media day in Ikot Ekpene ahead of the AFCON qualifiers, Troost-Ekong expressed delight over Musa’s return and made it clear that the former Leicester City man is still regarded as the leader of the Super Eagles.

“We’re happy he’s back,” Troost-Ekong said. “He’s still our captain, and he’s welcome back anytime. He’s our most capped player, a good role model, and a great leader. I am happy to deputise for him.”

Musa, who holds the record as Nigeria’s most capped player, has been out of the Super Eagles squad due to limited game time and injuries but remains an influential figure in the team. Troost-Ekong, his deputy, has stepped up in his absence, but the centre-back was quick to acknowledge Musa’s leadership and positive impact on the squad.

Musa’s impressive return to the NPFL has reignited conversations about whether he could be called up for Nigeria’s November international fixtures. While it remains uncertain if the Super Eagles coach will recall the forward, Troost-Ekong’s words confirm that Musa’s presence is always valued within the national setup.
