William Troost-Ekong reveals his Super Eagles target

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has expressed his desire to play until the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but emphasised that his primary focus is on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

When available, William Troost-Ekong is a prominent member of the Super Eagles team, since his debut in 2015, and has accumulated 71 appearances.

Last year, there were indications of a potential international retirement for the PAOK player, but instead he staged a remarkable performance at the recent AFCON, contributing three goals en route to their second-place finish. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the tournament award.

Despite being sidelined due to injury since February, Troost-Ekong aims to return in time for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa.

While he could play a crucial role in the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the tournament proper if he maintains fitness, Troost-Ekong has made it clear that his ultimate goal is success at the next World Cup.

“Yes, I will be available for the 2025 AFCON, but the 2026 World Cup is my main target,” William Troost-Ekong said in an interview with Eagle FM, as per Daily Post.

” I feel I am coming to the best year of my career. I feel good physically and I am recovering well now. I feel more motivated than before and to really be part of history and join some of the great stars who have won one trophy before,”

“So that is one thing I really want to achieve in my career. And I know I need to play well at club level to put myself in the picture and we have the chance to do so hopefully next year in Morocco. It will be better than we did in Cote d’Ivoire.” Ekong remarked.
