Wimbledon Shocker: Madison Keys Dumped Out in Third Round by Unseeded Siegemund

In a major surprise at Wimbledon on Friday, Madison Keys, the sixth seed and reigning Australian Open champion, was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Germany’s Laura Siegemund, who is ranked 104th in the world.

The match ended so one-sided that even experienced observers were stunned. With this result, only one of the top six women—No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka—remains in the draw. Sabalenka is set to play Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open winner, later today.

Other big names like Coco Gauff (2), Jessica Pegula (3), Jasmine Paolini (4) and Zheng Qinwen (5) have already been knocked out. The men’s draw has also seen its fair share of upsets, with 13 seeds eliminated in the first round, a tournament record.

Siegemund, who won their only previous Wimbledon meeting in 2022, admitted the match was tough.

“At times it wasn’t the best quality. But I stayed calm, found solutions. You always get nervous—if you don’t, you’re probably dead!” she joked.

Keys is yet to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon, despite her success elsewhere—including her breakthrough wins at the US Open and Australian Open in 2025. But today, her powerful play could not match Siegemund’s clever spins and slices, especially in the wind.

Keys made 31 unforced errors, compared to just 11 from Siegemund—a stat that told the story.

When the deciding backhand from Keys flew out, Siegemund leapt in celebration.

“You can’t help but be happy when you beat a great player like Madison,” she said.

Before this year, Siegemund had a 2-5 record at Wimbledon, never making it past round two—though she did reach the quarter-finals of the 2020 French Open. At 37, she is now the oldest woman left in the tournament.

“No pressure,” she said. “I play for myself. I don’t feel I need to prove anything. My partner reminds me of that.”

Next up for Siegemund is Solana Sierra, a surprise quarter-finalist from Argentina, ranked 101st and who entered the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’.

Friday’s other headline results:

  • Ben Shelton (USA) eased through on Centre Court after his last match was paused.

  • Naomi Osaka was knocked out in the third round by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

  • Amanda Anisimova (USA) continued her run to the fourth round.

Saturday on Centre Court sees Iga Świątek take on Danielle Collins, while Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic are also in action. On No. 1 Court, Hailey Baptiste faces No. 7 Mirra Andreeva, and No. 10 Emma Navarro plays defending champion Barbora Krejčíková.
