Women’s World Cup: What must happen for Super Falcons to secure 1 of the 2 remaining third-place slots
With two of the four best third-placed placed spots taken by Brazil and China what are the chances of Nigeria nicking one of the two places left?
Nigeria finished 3rd in group A with 3 points and a goal difference of -2.
Already from group B, China with 4 points have joined Germany and Spain in making the knock-out stages.
From group C, Brazil joined Italy and Australia to qualify from the group. Group D only have England and Japan as third place Argentina finished with just 2 points.
All the attention will be on group E and F where the last two spaces could lost and won.
In group E, Netherlands and Canada already through as first-second teams, either of Cameroon or New Zealand who go head to head today can make it ahead of Nigeria if either side win with more than 1 goal margin difference as both teams have 0 points and -1 at the moment.
With USA and Sweden already qualified from group F, Chile with zero points and -5 goal difference must beat ‘points donors’ Thailand by more than 2 goals margin to beat Nigeria to a spot.
The chances of Super Falcons of Nigeria advancing are slim but they have a hope as we head into the final group games at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
