World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated in Paris
Jannik Sinner is out of the French Open after an unbelievable second-round collapse against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.
The world No. 1 looked completely in control early, leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 before the match suddenly changed.
Sinner began struggling physically midway through the third set and couldn’t recover afterward, which gave Cerundolo the edge to win 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.
The defeat ends Sinner’s incredible 30-match winning streak and marks the first time since Andre Agassi in 2000 that a men’s world No. 1 has lost in the opening two rounds at Roland Garros.
For Cerundolo, the victory is the biggest moment of his career so far.
The Argentine secured his first-ever top-10 win and did it against the top-ranked player in the world on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
Despite the heartbreaking ending, Sinner continued fighting until the final point while clearly struggling physically throughout the later stages of the match.
This defeat also means that, for the first time in nine straight Grand Slams, neither Sinner nor Carlos Alcaraz will win the men’s singles title.
