Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner, according to reports, to take over as the manager at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of his departure at the end of the current season.
Alonso, currently coaching Nigeria’s Victor Boniface at Bayer Leverkusen, is early favourite to return to his former club once Klopp concludes his tenure in the summer.
Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/2024 season was confirmed through a video posted on the club’s official social media page.
In the video, Klopp expressed his love for the club and staff, stating that he is convinced the decision to leave is the right one due to running out of energy.

Immediately after the announcement, Sporting Life reported that Alonso, who has excelled as Bayer Leverkusen’s manager, has become the favorite to succeed Klopp at Anfield.
Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen has transformed from a relegation-threatened position to topping the Bundesliga, with Nigeria’s Boniface playing a significant role.
The 40-year-old Spaniard, a former World Cup winner, spent five years at Liverpool and was part of the team that won the 2005 UEFA Champions League.
With his impressive coaching achievements at Leverkusen, Alonso is now seen as the leading candidate to take charge at Liverpool and continue the club’s success.
