Xabi Alonso Leaves Real Madrid by Mutual Agreement

Xabi Alonso has stepped down as Real Madrid manager by mutual agreement, less than 24 hours after his team’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup.

Real Madrid confirmed the decision on Monday evening, bringing an end to Alonso’s spell at the club just seven months after his appointment. The former midfielder took charge of 28 matches, recording 20 wins and five defeats.

In a statement, the club said Alonso would “always have the affection and admiration of all Real Madrid fans” and described him as a club legend who represents the values of Real Madrid. The club added that Madrid would always remain his home and thanked Alonso and his coaching staff for their work and commitment.

Alonso’s position had come under pressure during his first season, with mixed results and reported issues involving senior players, despite a run of five straight wins before the Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia.

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been promoted from the reserve team to take over as head coach.

Before choosing Real Madrid, Alonso had been strongly linked with Liverpool, where he was seen as a leading candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp following the German’s announcement in January 2024.
