Xabi Alonso reveals how he manages the off-field attitude of ‘memes lord’ Victor Boniface
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso recently opened up about managing the lively personality of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, detailing how he helps keep the young forward focused on football.
Boniface, known for his jovial nature both on and off the pitch, has quickly become a fan favourite at Leverkusen.
The 21-year-old striker, who previously impressed at Union Berlin before an injury setback, has been in excellent form this season. He has already scored three goals and provided one assist in just four matches, signaling his return to top performance levels.
Despite his impressive talent, Boniface is known for his playful attitude, which is reflected in his social media presence, where he frequently shares memes. This light-hearted approach also extends to the dressing room, where he is a source of entertainment for his teammates, as seen in a recent video of him jokingly asking Super Eagles teammate Taiwo Awoniyi for €100.
However, managing such a free-spirited player in a competitive environment can pose challenges. Speaking after Boniface’s standout performance, including a brace and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Mainz, Xabi Alonso explained how he balances the striker’s personality with the need for focus on the game.
“All the teammates really like him,” Alonso said. “The guy creates a great atmosphere. Sometimes you have to force him to focus only on football, but that’s my job; that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Alonso’s remarks reflect his appreciation for Boniface’s character, but also his understanding of the importance of maintaining discipline and focus in top-level football.
