Yaya Touré makes History as Slovan Bratislava reaches Champions League
Yaya Touré has made history in his first senior managerial role, becoming the first African head coach to lead a club into the UEFA Champions League group stage.
The former Ivory Coast and Manchester City midfielder achieved this after Slovan Bratislava defeated Slovenian side NK Celje 2-1 after extra time on Wednesday.
The victory gave Slovan a 3-2 aggregate win and secured their place among the 36 teams in this season’s Champions League.
Touré took charge of the Slovakian club this summer and this is his first senior job as a head coach. Within weeks, he has taken Slovan through the qualifying rounds and into European football’s biggest club competition.
Shortly after the qualification, he shared a message on X celebrating the players, staff, supporters and his African identity.
“Proud of my players, staff, the club and our fans! Proud to be in the Champions League together. Proud to be African. Lots more to do. Together!”
Slovan Bratislava will now compete in the 2026/27 Champions League, after the draw placed the club among Europe’s elite. ([Reuters][5])
