Young Spurs Team Make NBA Finals History

The San Antonio Spurs are heading to the NBA Finals as one of the youngest player groups ever to reach this stage.

According to postseason playing time, the players who have carried the Spurs throughout the playoffs have an average age of 25.06 years. That makes San Antonio the second-youngest team to reach the NBA Finals in the shot clock era. Only the 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers were younger, with an average age of 25.03 years.

After defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, San Antonio has earned the opportunity to compete for an NBA championship much sooner than many expected.

Youngest NBA Finals teams in the shot clock era:

  • Portland Trail Blazers (1976-77) — 25.03
  • San Antonio Spurs (2025-26) — 25.06
  • Oklahoma City Thunder (2024-25) — 25.56

The only team younger than this Spurs squad to reach the NBA Finals was the 1976-77 Trail Blazers, who went on to win the championship.

Few expected San Antonio to reach this stage so quickly. Now, after an impressive playoff run, the Spurs find themselves just four wins away from an NBA title.

San Antonio will now face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, with Game 1 scheduled for June 3 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
