Zverev Names His French Open Favourite and Speaks on Facing Djokovic

Alexander Zverev has shared who he believes is favourite to win the French Open this year, while also giving his thoughts ahead of his quarter-final clash with Novak Djokovic.

The world number 3 will face Djokovic, the all-time Grand Slam record holder, in the last eight on Wednesday at Roland Garros.

Zverev and Djokovic have met 13 times, with the German winning 5 and losing 8. Their rivalry began in 2017, and their most recent meeting was earlier this year in January.

Zverev reached the quarter-finals after his opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, retired from their fourth-round match due to injury while trailing 6-4, 3-0.

Djokovic, on the other hand, continued his impressive form by beating Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth round. The 37-year-old Serbian has yet to drop a set in the tournament so far.

When asked if Djokovic is considered a favourite or a “dark horse”, Zverev replied confidently.

“The guy has won 24 Grand Slams. He’s never going to be a black horse,” said the 28-year-old.

“He knows how to play tennis. He knows how to play on big stages and in big matches — there’s no doubt.”

Zverev continued:

“Up to now, I’ve focused on my own matches. Now, I’ll focus on Novak. He will never be a dark horse.”

Despite praising Djokovic, Zverev said his favourite for the title is Carlos Alcaraz.

“For me, Carlos is the favourite. I’ve said that before. Then I’d put Jannik [Sinner], myself, and Novak as the next in line.
On experience and ability, Novak is right there with us.”

Looking ahead, Zverev admitted he has a tough road in the tournament.

“I think I now have the toughest draw. But I’m excited for the challenge and to play against the best in the world.”

Zverev, who lost to Djokovic in straight sets in the 2019 French Open quarter-finals, also reflected on how things have changed since then.

“Back then, he was much better than me, especially at Grand Slam level.
The first set was close, but after that, he beat me easily.

“Since then, we’ve played many times, including at Slams. I’ve had big wins, and some tough losses. We’ve built a strong rivalry.”

The German is still chasing his first Grand Slam title and came close last year when he finished as runner-up to Alcaraz at Roland Garros. Now, he’s determined to go one step further.
