McEnroe backs Murray for ´best chance´ at French Open

Tennis great John McEnroe has implored Andy Murray to take his “best chance” of winning the French Open with both hands.

McEnroe has backed the Brit to take out his first French Open and stop world number one Novak Djokovic from completing a career Grand Slam.

Murray will have to overcome defending champion Stan Wawrinka in the semi-finals if he is to do so, and has already sought advice from Australian tennis legend Rod Laver to that end, with McEnroe claiming this year is his best chance to win the title.

“There’s a chance for Murray, maybe his best chance to win the French ever could be this year. I don’t know if he’s going to be able to keep this up, so to me he has got his best shot,” the American said.

“I think he is doing everything he can, but he is coming up against some pretty stiff competition.

“It’s insane how difficult these guys are to beat but the potential is there. I still think Murray could add on another two [grand slams], although Stan looks pretty dangerous right now.”

Murray has lost his last three matches against Wawrinka, with the latter having won all three of their previous matches on clay – the last of those coming in 2013.
