Andy Murray: ‘Phenomenal Djokovic deserves French Open win’

Andy Murray has congratulated Novak Djokovic after the Serb emerged victorious in the French Open final and wrote his name in tennis history.

Djokovic beat Murray 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 to clinch his maiden Roland Garros title and seal the notable achievement of holding all four Grand Slams at the same time.

In addition the 29-year-old has become just the eighth man in history to complete the career Grand Slam after Andre Agassi, Don Budge, Roy Emerson, Roger Federer, Rod Laver, Rafael Nadal and Fred Perry.

Murray told the crowd after the match: “Congratulations to Novak’s team – you deserve it, well done. To Novak, this is his day.

“What he’s achieved, the last 12 months is phenomenal, winning all the Grand Slams in one year is an amazing achievement.

“It’s so rare in tennis, and for me personally, it sucks to lose the match, but I’m proud to have been part of today.”

Djokovic is also only the third man in history to complete a non-calendar year Grand Slam – Laver was the last in 1969, with Budge also achieving the feat.
