Mamelodi Sundowns 2 Enyimba 1: Peoples’ Elephant fail to make their chances count in defeat

Leonardo Castro and Wayne Arendse scored as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Enyimba 2-1 in their CAF Champions League clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The Nigeria Premier League champions who lost their first match of the campaign at home to Zamalek would have themselves to blame for not converting their chances in the first half of their encounter against the Absa Premiership champions.

Enyimba would have been a goal up as early as 8 minute but Mabunda made no mistake clearing the ball on the edge of Sundowns’ box. Three minutes after the clearance Sundowns’ Thabo would have put the host ahead but Enyimba’s defender cleared the ball for a corner.

Ifeanyi Onuigbo had his powerful drive from the edge saved by Sandilands Wayne, after the 24 minutes of action Enyimba looked the better of the two on the night.

Sundowns were feeling the pressure and on the 25 minutes Tiyani made his way into the referees book following a dangerous tackle. Sandilands Wayne was again Sundowns saviour denying Enyimba yet again with a wonderful save.

Enyimba’s good spell almost paid off but Arendse lovely piece of defending denied The Peoples’ Elephant. Just after Enyimba’s chance, Leonardo Castro put the home side ahead following a goal mouth scramble.

Leonardo Castro’s 42nd minutes strike the difference at the end of the first 45minutes.

Enyimba started the 2nd half just as they ended the first half giving it everything but it was the hosts who had a call for penalty waved off after Khama fell in their box following lovely exchange of passes with Keagan.

Seyi Ojo’s thunderous effort from the edge of the box restored parity in the 58 minutes but Wayne’s 77 minutes strike restored Sundowns lead.

With the home team playing with lot confidence they almost made it three but Khama and Leo couldn’t convert their chances, 2-1 it ended at the Lucas Moripe Stadium and Sundowns secured the maximum points.
