Riyad Mahrez shuns Arsenal, signs new Leicester City contract

Riyad Mahrez has signed a new contract with Leicester City that commits him to the Premier League champions until June 2020.

The 25-year-old Algeria international was one of the star performers of Leicester’s remarkable title triumph last season, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists in the league to earn the coveted PFA Player of the Year award.

This stunning form saw Mahrez linked to a host of major European clubs, with Arsenal the most recent to be mentioned in speculation regarding the winger.

But Mahrez has now joined team-mate Jamie Vardy, the striker who was the subject of a transfer bid from Arsenal in June, in agreeing fresh terms at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri secured an extended contract of his own on the eve of the new season and has largely kept his title-winning squad intact.

N’Golo Kante’s move to Chelsea stands as the only major departure, while goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, captain Wes Morgan and midfielder Andy King are also in possession of new contracts following their part in the title heroics.

Leicester entertain Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday, having suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at newly promoted Hull City in the opening game of the season.

Mahrez scored Leicester’s goal at the KCOM Stadium from the penalty spot.
