2022 French Open Day Nine: Medvedev, Tsitsipas stunned, crash out of tournament

Swiatek, Pegula, Kudermetova all through to last eight

Some of the biggest upsets of the 2022 French Open came on Day Nine of the tournament, with some big names falling to shock defeats.

World number two Daniil Medvedev was stunned by 20th seeded Croatian Mario Cilic 6-2 6-3 6-2, losing in straight sets against the one-time Grand Slam winner, who will now proceed to the quarterfinals of the competition.

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out of the 2022 French Open after a defeat to teenage Dane Holger Rune. Rune defeated the Greek star 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-4 to book his place in the last eight of the competition. Rune and Tsitsipas are incidentally both students of the Moratoglou Tennis Academy.

Andrey Rublev booked his place in the quarterfinal after a win over 11th seed Italian Jannik Sinner after the 20-year-old had to retire due to an injury in the third set. Sinner won the first set 6-1 before seventh seed Rublev claimed the second set 6-4 and was leading the third 2-0 before Sinner retired. Rublev will take on Cilic in his own quarterfinal.

Eighth seed Norwegian Casper Ruud defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-3 in four sets to book his place in the quarterfinal of the competition, where he will face Rune.

In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek claimed her 32nd consecutive win by holding off teenage Chinese player Qinwen Zheng after losing the first set. The world number one claimed a 6-7 6-0 6-2 win to qualify for the last eight.

Jessica Pegula booked her place in the quarterfinals after a 4-6 6-2 6-3 win over Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu in their third-round clash at the 2022 French Open. She will now face Swiatek for a place in the last four.

Veronika Kudermetova defeated Madison Keys 1-6 6-3 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament. She will face Kasatkina for a chance to reach the semifinals.

20th seed Daria Kasatkina claimed a straight-sets 6-2 6-2 win over Camila Giorgi to book her place in the last eight of the French Open.
