2023 Australian Open Day Two: Murray stuns Berrettini as Djokovic, Jabeur progress

Ruud, Zverev, Kontaveit, Fernandez all through to second round

Andy Murray started his 2023 Australian Open campaign with a stunning win over 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in five sets. The veteran claimed his 50th career Australian Open win with a 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-7 7-6 win over the Italian star.

Alexander Zverev defeated Juan Pablo Varillas in five sets to qualify for the second round of the 2023 Australian Open. The German came from a set down to win 4-6 6-1 5-7 7-6 6-4 against his Peruvian opponent.

Second seed Casper Ruud dispatched Tomas Machac in four sets to book his place in the second round of the tournament in Melbourne. Ruud claimed a 6-3 7-6 6-7 6-3 triumph in his first major match since losing the US Open final.

Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic showed his readiness for action with a straight sets win over Roberto Carballes Baena. The Serbian won the game 6-3 6-4 6-0 to qualify for the second round of the tournament in style.

Andrey Rublev overcame Dominic Thiem in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-2 to book his passage into the second round of the competition.

In the women’s draw, Ons Jabeur needed three sets to defeat Tamara Zidansek in their first round meeting at the 2023 Australian Open. The Tunisian second seed claimed a 7-6 4-6 6-1 win over Zidansek in the encounter.

Anett Kontaveit claimed a straight sets win over Julia Grabher. The 16th-seed claimed a 6-2 6-3 win over her Austrian opponent to reach the second round in Melbourne.

Leylah Fernandez defeated veteran Alize Cornet in straight sets to advance to the second round of the 2023 Australian Open. The one-time Grand Slam runner-up claimed a 7-5 6-2 win to progress.

Caroline Garcia claimed a straight sets win over Katherine Sebov to reach the second round of the competition. The fourth seed claimed a 6-3 6-0 win to breeze past her opponent.

Elise Mertens defeated Garbine Muguruza in three sets to reach the second round in Melbourne. She lost the first set 3-6 before recovering to take the subsequent sets 7-6 6-1.
