Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has defended his decision to leave Kobbie Mainoo on the bench despite the midfielder’s standout form for England. Mainoo, who impressed during the recent international break, remained unused in United’s 1–1 draw with West Ham, a move that sparked many reactions.
Amorim explained that his selection was based on system fit rather than talent, saying:
“I understand what you are saying. You love Kobbie. He starts for England, but that doesn’t mean I need to put Kobbie on when I feel I shouldn’t.”
United’s midfield choices have been under scrutiny as the club sits 13th in the Premier League and remains winless in four matches. With only 171 domestic minutes this season, Mainoo’s limited involvement has raised concerns, including criticism from club legend Paul Scholes, who warned the youngster risks being “ruined” if his development stalls.
