Zenith 3-Chelsea 3: Blues miss out on top spot could face Madrid, Bayern in last 16
Chelsea have missed out on top spot after playing a 3-3 draw against Zenit St. Petersburg at Gazprom Arena in the last group H game on Wednesday.
Timo Werner put the visitors up in the second minutes of the game but Zenit St. Petersburg scored two goals before half time to take a 2-1 lead at interval.
Claudinho and Sardar Azmoun scored the goals four minutes apart with the first coming in the 38th minutes and the second in the 41st minute.
Chelsea who were with a number of their first team players had wing back Reece James in the midfield alongside Ross Barkley.
On loan midfielder Saul played as the left wing back while Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Mason Mount played up front.
The second half was much better from Chelsea with the introduction of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, and soon Chelsea got the equaliser through Romelu Lukaku.
Timo Werner then scored Chelsea’s third in the 85th minute of the game 17 minutes after providing the assist for Lukaku’s goal.
There was room for a late drama as Magomed Ozdoev powered home a last minute goal to draw the game for Zenit.
The points loss meant Chelsea finished second 2 points behind Juventus who defeated Malmo 1-0 in their own game.
This means Chelsea could likely face in-form Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Ajax in the last 16.
