Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume set to receive Presidential reception after Athletics feats

Nigeria’s reigning Queens of Athletics, Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, have received invitations to a Presidential reception with the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari after their exploits on the biggest stages.

At the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon, Team Nigeria had failed to record a single medal until the final day of the competition. On the final day, Tobi Amusan shattered the world record in the 100mH to emerge as Nigeria’s first world champion ever and give the country its first gold medal. Shortly afterwards, Ese Brume won the silver medal in the women’s long jump, narrowly missing out on the gold medal.

Both of these women repeated their acts just under two weeks later halfway across the world in Birmingham at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Amusan set a new Commonwealth record to retain the gold medal she won in 2018 before teaming up with Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha to win gold in the women’s 4x100m relay, setting an African record in the process. Not to be outdone, Brume set a new Commonwealth record hours later in the women’s long jump to win gold in the event.

Amusan and Brume have been Nigeria’s most consistent athletes in recent years with their performances on the international stage. The former became Nigeria’s first Diamond League champion in 2021 and the latter won Nigeria’s only athletics medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The minister of youth & Sports, Sunday Dare revealed today, that there would be a presidential reception for both athletes at the Villa, following their recent achievements for the country.
