WAFU B U-20 Cup: Falconets defeat Burkina Faso, seal semifinal spot
Ajakaye continues to impress for Nigeria
Nigeria’s Falconets continued to impress at the WAFU B U-20 Cup in Ghana as they finished the group stage with a 3-0 win over Burkina Faso to reach the semifinals of the competition.
Having won their first two games against Niger Republic and Togo, the Falconets were out to end the group phase with a 100% record when they took on Burkina Faso in Kumasi.
The Nigerian girls needed only a quarter of an hour to open the scoring through the tournament’s top scorer Opeyemi Ajakaye, who pulled off an audacious chip to open the score with her fifth goal of the tournament.
Nigeria failed to score any more in the first half as the Burkinabe players dropped deeper and deeper, denying the Falconets the freedom to play their game.
The Falconets doubled their advantage in the 64th minute through Ajakaye, who rifled home after pouncing on a loose pass from a Burkinabe defender, taking her tally to six in three games.
With the match drawing to a close, substitute Flourish Sabastine added a third goal, her second of the tournament, for the Falconets after she was played in by Amina Bello.
The Falconets eased to a comfortable win at the end and will face Group A runners-up Benin Republic for a place in the final.
