WAFU B U-20 Cup: Falconets through to semis after thrashing Togo

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, booked their place in the semifinals of the WAFU B U-20 Cup in Ghana following a 6-0 win over their Togolese counterparts in their second group match.

After a fantastic win in their opener against Niger Republic, the Falconets were looking to seal a semifinal spot against Togo.

The Falconets took the lead just 11 minutes into the game when winger Amina Bello fired them in front. Their advantage was extended only one minute later through Rivers Angel starlet Flourish Sabastine, who scored on her first start in the competition. Esther Onyenezide scored the Falconets’ third in the 30th minute from the penalty spot.

Nigeria were unrelenting in their play and got a fourth in the 59th minute through Bello, who completed her brace. Striker Opeyemi Ajakaye scored the side’s fifth of the game two minutes later to take her tally for the competition to four in two games. Sabastine had the final say as she scored the side’s sixth in the 76th minute to round off the scoring.

Nigeria have booked their place in the semifinals of the competition in Ghana. The Falconets will face Burkina Faso in the final group game on Saturday May 27th.
