Victor Osimhen makes history, becomes first African Capocannoniere

Victor Osimhen made history in Serie A as the 2022-23 season came to an end, becoming the first African in the league’s 125-year history to win the Capocannoniere.

Osimhen emerged from the blocks quickly in the 2022-23 season, scoring on his two appearances against Hellas Verona and Monza but failed to score in each of the next three games before missing four games through injury.

The 24-year-old returned to goalscoring ways upon his return, scoring six times in five games, including a spectacular late winner at AS Roma. From this point, he only failed to score in eight league games this season, with his goals propelling the side to a first league title since 1990. Fittingly, it was he who scored the goal that sealed the league win for the Partenopei.

Osimhen ended the season with a penalty goal against Sampdoria, ending the season as he started on opening day. The goal took his tally for the club to 26 in 32 league appearances, with only two of those coming from the penalty spot. He scored 17 goals with his right foot, two with his left foot and seven headers.

The Nigerian striker won the league’s Best Striker Award and also broke the league’s records for most goals ever by an African player previously held by George Weah, and most goals in a season by an African player, previously held by Samuel Eto’o.

In winning the Capocannoniere, Victor Osimhen has rendered himself untouchable in the history books and has confirmed his status as the greatest African striker to grace the Serie A.
