Wayne Rooney confirms BOXING offer
Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has confirmed that he has had discussions with a boxing promoter about potentially participating in one of their events.
However, he emphasised that his primary focus remains on returning to football management after his recent sack by Birmingham.
Rooney, 38, revealed in an interview on “The Overlap” podcast with former players Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, and Jill Scott, that he has been approached by a boxing promoter, specifically Misfits Boxing, about the possibility of stepping into the ring.
While Rooney acknowledged the discussions, he made it clear that his immediate priority is to pursue a career in football management rather than boxing.
Although Misfits Boxing have organized events featuring unconventional matchups involving personalities like YouTube stars and social media influencers, Rooney’s interest in boxing stems from his passion for the sport.
He has previously supported prominent boxers such as Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan, and the Smith brothers.
Rooney said of the Boxing offer: “you never know.”
“They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing,” he said.
“There’s been a few [offers] and obviously Misfits have been in and that’s been all over the news. But listen I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.”
Despite the intrigue surrounding the potential crossover between football and boxing, Rooney’s recent departure from his managerial role at Birmingham City shows his dedication to pursuing opportunities within football.
While Misfits Boxing operates outside the jurisdiction of the British Boxing Board of Control, any involvement from Rooney would likely attract significant attention given his status as a football icon.
