Adarabioyo’s Nigeria or England Choice Hinges on 2026 World Cup Hopes
Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo says he will soon decide whether to represent Nigeria or England at senior international level and that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will play a key role in his final decision.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, Adarabioyo has represented England at youth levels — from under-16 to under-19 — but has never featured for the senior team. At 27, he is still eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Speaking to the BBC, Adarabioyo said the upcoming World Cup is a big motivation behind his need to make a choice quickly.
> “The World Cup means it’s a decision I need to take sooner rather than later. It is a conversation we will have, and we will see how it goes,” he said.
For years, there have been discussions about Adarabioyo joining the Super Eagles, especially during his time at Fulham, but the move never materialised. Now at Chelsea, and with Nigeria struggling in the World Cup qualifiers, the defender may have to think twice before committing to the West African nation.
Adarabioyo grew up in England and has always been part of the English football system, making him a strong candidate to wait for a possible Three Lions call-up. But with no invitation yet from Gareth Southgate’s side, switching to Nigeria could offer him an immediate opportunity to play international football.
The Super Eagles, who are lacking quality in central defence especially with William Troost-Ekong nearing the end of his career, would likely welcome him straight into the team.
Adarabioyo joined Chelsea from Fulham last season and made 37 appearances, scoring four goals and providing one assist. He has also featured in Chelsea’s campaign at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, appearing in two matches.
Although some Chelsea fans have criticised his pace and aggression, he remains strong in aerial duels and has shown good technical ability.
Whether he picks Nigeria or England, one thing is clear — the 2026 World Cup could be his best shot at playing on the global stage. His final decision is expected in the coming months.
