Akinkunmi Amoo returns to action with Omonia after lengthy Injury layoff

Nigeria international and former U-17 forward, Akinkunmi Amoo, has made a comeback to the pitch, featuring for his club side Omonia in a triumphant 3-1 home victory against AEL in the Cyprus League.

Amoo, who moved to Omonia on a three-year deal in September, has faced persistent setbacks due to injuries throughout his career.

The 21-year-old’s injury struggles began when he missed an entire season for his former club FC Copenhagen after sustaining a serious Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

Despite showing potential, Amoo made only four appearances for the Danish club since arriving in January 2022, managing to score one goal.

His return to the pitch follows a challenging period that saw him endure three months on the sidelines after suffering a severe injury.

However, Amoo’s football career has also been overshadowed by serious off-field allegations.

The Nigeria international faced accusations of indecent assault, attempted rape, and sexual misconduct in Denmark, purportedly resulting in a one-year prison sentence for sexual assault.

These allegations surfaced in April, July, and August 2022, leading to multiple criminal charges against Amoo.

Although he was initially arrested on September 10th, 2022, and released on bail on October 7th of the same year, Amoo’s representation agency refuted the accuracy of the claims, asserting that he had not been sentenced.

Despite the off-field controversies, Amoo’s return to action for Omonia marks a potential resurgence in his career.

The 21-year-old had previously shown promise on the international stage, contributing to Nigeria’s fourth-place finish at the 2019 U-17 AFCON and delivering noteworthy performances at the World Cup in Poland.

His return to the pitch for Omonia is a significant step in reclaiming his career trajectory following a tumultuous period both on and off the field.

Amoo came on for Willy Semedo in the win for Omonia Nicosia, compatriot Francis Uzoho was in goal for Nicosia who occupy third spot in the Cypriot league.
