Akwa Ibom Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey Outlines Plans to Develop Sports Across the State
Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, has shared his vision for transforming sports in the state, with a strong focus on grassroots development and expanding support beyond football.
Bassey spoke during a visit to Comfort 95.1 FM in Uyo, where he showed support for broadcaster Mighty George, who is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest radio talk show.
While congratulating George on his efforts, Bassey used the opportunity to highlight his plans for sports growth in Akwa Ibom, just one month after assuming office.
“We want to develop all sports, not just football,” Bassey said. “We are working towards having a State Basketball team, a Volleyball team, and supporting every sports association in Akwa Ibom.”
He added that between now and November, each sports association in the state must organise at least one competition, as part of a wider effort to engage young athletes and revive interest in different sporting activities.
The Commissioner stressed that grassroots development is key to his plans and confirmed that with Governor Umo Eno’s backing, a State Sports Festival will soon be introduced to help discover and nurture talent.
Speaking about the National Sports Festival, Bassey stated, “We’re not going there just to participate. I’m not in a hurry to win medals; I’m in a hurry to develop stars.”
He also revealed that the state government is reviewing successful sports academy models from other parts of Nigeria, with the goal of establishing a fully functional Sports Academy in Akwa Ibom.
On Akwa United FC’s current position in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Bassey expressed optimism that the team could still avoid relegation, with three matches remaining.
