Anthony Joshua Considering Investment in Watford FC

British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua is thinking about investing in Watford Football Club — his hometown team.

The former world heavyweight champion was born and raised in Watford and still lives nearby. Reports say he is looking into the idea of buying a share in the club, which currently plays in the EFL Championship.

At 35, Joshua has already enjoyed a successful boxing career. He won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics and became a two-time world champion as a professional. He has earned an estimated $110 million from the sport.

Now, Joshua is planning to use his wealth to build long-term business interests. He has already invested in property and other ventures, and football could be his next step.

Speaking to Seconds Out, Joshua said he’s trying to invest wisely rather than spend carelessly. Watford FC, he explained, is one opportunity being seriously considered.

“We wanted to move into private equity and venture capital funds,” Joshua said. “Rather than spending recklessly, I’m trying to invest in assets — and Watford was one of the opportunities that came up.”

He added, “Nothing has happened yet, but it’s a serious investment. If it works out, it should go well. If they return to the Premier League, I might even need to open a shop on Market Street — the number of people coming to Watford would be amazing.”

“I’m not the biggest football fan,” he admitted, “but I’ve always loved seeing the fans walk down Market Street to Vicarage Road. Great scenes. If I don’t end up investing, I still wish them all the best — they’re a good team.”
