Atletico Madrid book Champions League quater-finals spot with shoot-out victory against Inter Milan

Atletico Madrid has secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after defeating Inter Milan in a thrilling match that ended in a penalty shootout.

Despite losing the first leg 1-0, Atletico staged a remarkable comeback at the Wanda Metropolitano, winning 2-1 to force extra time and eventually clinch victory via penalties.

The game started with Atletico Madrid eager to overturn the deficit, applying early pressure and launching several shots on goal. Inter Milan, however, did not sit back to defend their lead and began to mount attacks of their own.

In the 32nd minute, Federico Di Marco put Inter ahead with a well-taken goal, receiving a cutback from Barella and firing past Jan Oblak. But Atletico quickly responded, with Antoine Griezmann restoring parity just two minutes later.

The second half saw both teams continuing to attack vigorously, but poor finishing prevented either side from finding the back of the net.

Despite chances for both teams, the score remained level until the 87th minute when Memphis Depay scored to put Atletico 2-1 ahead on the night, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2.

With no winner in extra time, the match was decided by a penalty shootout. After a tense exchange of penalties, Atletico emerged victorious, winning the shootout 3-2.

Notably, goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved crucial penalties from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klassen, while Lautaro Martinez skied his effort, sealing Atletico’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Atletico Madrid’s triumph over Inter Milan has made LaLiga the most represented league in the Champions League final eight, adding another chapter to their remarkable European campaign.
