Augustine Eguavoen confirmed as Super Eagles head coach after Impressive AFCON qualifying start

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have officially appointed Augustine Eguavoen as the head coach of the Super Eagles, following his impressive performance in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The announcement was made on Thursday, solidifying Eguavoen’s role after a successful interim spell.

Eguavoen, 58, who had been serving as the NFF’s Technical Director, takes charge of the national team ahead of their upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifying matches, including a crucial fixture against Libya. His appointment follows a recommendation from the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

The veteran coach impressed the federation with his leadership during Nigeria’s recent qualifiers, where the Super Eagles secured a dominant 3-0 win over Benin Republic and a hard-fought goalless draw against Rwanda. These results have left Nigeria in a strong position early in their qualifying campaign, earning four points from two games.

Eguavoen’s technical team includes assistant coaches Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec. Together, they will also manage the Super Eagles B team, which will compete in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers, a competition exclusive to players from Africa’s domestic leagues.

This appointment marks Eguavoen’s fourth spell as Super Eagles head coach, with his vast experience in Nigerian football management seen as a key asset for guiding the team through their AFCON journey. His appointment also ends speculation linking other candidates, such as Bruno Labbadia, to the role.

With his new role confirmed, Eguavoen and his staff will focus on continuing their positive momentum and securing Nigeria’s spot in the 2025 AFCON.
