Austin Eguavoen laments lack of offensive box-to-box midfielders in Super Eagles

Promises to make do with the players at his disposal

Austin Eguavoen has lamented the lack of offensive box-to-box players in the mold of Thompson Oliha and Mutiu Adepoju in the current Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles interim coach in an interview with EaglesTracker explained how he combed the whole of Europe and the Nigerian league for offensive box-to-box players but found none.

Austin Eguavoen revealed that he couldn’t play his favourite formation because he currently lacks the kind of midfield players who could make it work.

“It is quite unfortunate that is why I went round the leagues both here and abroad,” said Eguavoen to EaglesTracker.

“The system that I like to play is to look for two offensive midfielder players who can run box-to-box just like we use to have Thompson Oliha and Mutiu Adepoju.

“If I can find those type of players the formation of the team will change.

“You have to play your formation to the strength of the players you have but if I could find two players in the mold of Thompson Oliha and Mutiu Adepoju our system will change

“I went round the leagues both Europe and here but I couldn’t find any like those players.”

Ghana will host Nigeria in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup Playoffs on 25th March 2022 with the return leg in Nigeria to follow four days later.

The aggregate winner of both legs will qualify for the 2022 World Cup In Qatar later in the year.
